Why does everyone think ae, abercrombie && hollister are preppy?

come on, they are so totally not. preppy is ralph lauren, lacoste, banana republic and j. crew. preppy is a lifestyle of popped collars, nantucket beach houses and classic clothing. abercrombie, hollister and ae couldn't be preppy if they were slapped with it. true preps would never shop there. if abercrombie was preppy, you wouldn't see kids whose parents only make 70,000 a yr wearing it.

My family basically is what you described (beach house in Cape cod, trip to europe every year, 2 bmw's, etc)





and people don't think i have more money than them I don't wear hollister, ae, abercrombie. Well, my back to school shopping spree costs more than their whole college tuition is going to cost, i can next to guarantee it. Lol. :-D





it will also come in handy when i'm driving that z4 to 11th grade next year.
Reply:because not everybody who likes preppy clothes can afford clothes from polo, j.crew, lacoste, or places like that. just becuase people don't have as much money doesn't mean that they don't like to dress preppy. besides, the definition of preppy is "a person who favors or is viewed as favoring clothing style or behavior associated with traditional preparatory schools." people can only do what they can with whatever amount of money they have, and they shouldn't be judged negatively because of that

Anyone who feels the need to spend WAY too much money for clothing on a label that is usually not made to last, is designed with holes premade into the jeans and put through abuse to "appear" worn and old is surely preppy as well as those "snooty rich" prepster looks who like the collars turned up. (just two different preppy classifications) Preppy to me is an image that is "bought" and sought after by people who do not have enough creative fashion knowledge to find it cheaper elsewhere. They go places that already have everything coordinated for them,,,what fun is that?? What about guys who are always in slacks and button down shirts or ladies who never wear pants? Is this preppy too? If there is not a name brand label in bold print associated with it then I dont think of it as being so preppy. Prepsters seem to have clothing that brags the label.

Reply:AE, Abercrombie, and Hollister are considered nuveau riche; it's the new age of prep. It's not New England prep, which is what you're describing with the Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Nantucket and Eastern Seaboard vacation homes.
Reply:I sort of agree. Abercrombie does have some clothes that are preppy inspired. Plaid and polos are preppy. But I agree that true preppy is nothing like those stores.
Reply:You sound like your "older" like 20's, 30's. That's the new generation of prep. The kids are making there own way into the fashion industry by bringing those clothes into it. That preppy you described is outdated prep. It's not about a parent's income. It's about the kid buying the clothes b/c they want it. The shirts at Kohl's are just the same price so it's not the price that matters. The old prep is gone and the new one is in. Why is it such a big deal to you. Banana Republic and Ralph Lauren isn't prep these days. There for older women or business attire. You seriously need to check out fashion before you go ripping kids for wearing Hollister and Abercrombie.
