Once upon a time we buttoned the top button on shirts. In fact, once upon a time we had separate collars that buttoned to themselves and to the shirts. In fact, these had "collar buttons" that were like small cuff links that came off for washing (or buying a new celluloid collar.)


These were snug and if a man got angry and clinched the muscles in the neck, he would "pop a collar button" or "pop his collar"
