What is the purpose behind popping one's collar?

It started along time ago. But it started by older people who were out in the sun. They didnt want to have the sun beating down on their necks and giving them a burn. So their collars protected them. From the seventies and now, kids do it to hid their hickies. They also do it because every other preppy person is doing it and it is necessary in their world to be 'trendy'. blah

What is the purpose behind popping one's collar?
