One that I'm getting few answers other than 'It's your choice, really.'
For those of you that show, you'll know what I'm talking about.
I've got a solid black great dane dog, 2 years old. Now. Would it be more proper to go with a white lead and collar? Or a black lead and collar?
If any of you pop in with 'HOW DARE YOU SHOW YOUR DOG!' blah blah blah, I'll report you for being an insufferable twitch. Sensible people, please help. Thank you! =)
Show lead/collar question?
I would go with a solid black show lead and collar. White will break the line of vision of his neck as the judge views him. I'm not involved in your breed but in ours, we try to make the lead/collar blend as much as possible to keep the lines clean. We want the Judges to see the dogs move without distraction from a bright lead.
ADDITION: Yes, I think soft blue would look good. It will contrast with him and make his black look good. Also solid red, white, etc.
I agree with the no black when showing black. I had a dog (table size breed) and I could not see him in the photo.. lol.. (YEARS ago.. I learned better!!) I'll even change jackets if showing different color dogs at the same show to contrast with them.
Reply:i used a black one on my Dane, but thay were just fun matches.
Reply:Absolutely want to use a black collar and lead. And you should be in contrasting. You don't want to be in back of the dog when standing, so the clothes don't matter there if you do it right, but when you go around the ring, you sure don't want your dog to fade into your clothes. You want all focus to be on your dog. You should simply be there to also cause the judge to love you both. If you are cute, and the judge is male, a quick sweet smile
Reply:I would show with a black lead/collar. It won't detract from the dog.
Reply:I also show Danes. Go with black.. You don't want it sticking out like a sore thumb.
Reply:BLACK!!!!!!
You do NOT want ANYTHING to detract from the dog!!!!
Plain black NARROW NYLON!!! Resco,martingale...fine chain.....whatever.
Ain't you been WATCHING what the PROS are using?
COPY them.
Anything else will look .....er....silly is the nicest word that comes to mind. Like "dressing" the dog. Like a TOY breed.
%26amp; do NOT wear light colors!!! OR black either! It'll get FILTHY in an INSTANT!!!
Reply:I own a Dane (rescued) as well but I show Cane Corsos.
Go with the Black...I always buy collars to match my dogs coat, Remember to wear something other than black when showing your dog!
I see so many people showing black dogs and they are wearing all black themselves...the show pics will be so dark you don't know where the dog ends and where your leg begins.
Reply:Freedom is correct. Your showing your dog not making a fashion statment. The judges eyes should just on the dog not the collar or lead OK.
Black is best OK.
Reply:Most show people want the leash to disappear as much as possible.
I show black dogs on black leashes. If the dog needs it, you can use a chain martingale or choke with a black lead.
A white lead would make a line across his neck and NOT look good IMHO. I rarely see colored leads in the breed ring, except in some breeds. I am seeing more of the braided kangaroo leads with a few nice beads. Classy with a little flash.
Reply:Go with black, you always want the leash to blend with the dog, not contrast it.
white dog = white show lead
black dog = black show lead
tan / apricot dog = tan show lead
etc.
And also, if you are the handler, your outfit should compliment your dog. (Not match, because you don't want your dog to blend into it, but it should look good with the dog.) Also don't wear anything too flashy because you want the focus to be on the dog, not on you. Solid colors or minimal prints are best, bold/bright prints should be avoided.
Reply:Your goal is to show the dog, and all attention should be on the dog. You don't want anything that is going to draw the judge's eye away from your dog. Go with the black.

Good luck in the ring.
Reply:use the black lead and collar, but either you or the handler needs to wear white or another light/bright color.
