I dont want to walk my dog anymore... im too afraid..?

A few months ago, I took my dog for a walk. He wrapped around a tree and tugged, which made his collar pop off. I stayed calm because I didn't want to scare him and make him run off, so I just bent down on my knees and said, "Hi Cody, baby! Come here!" in a coaxing voice. Soon enough he bolted off. He didn't know how to come so I was very afraid. I finally got him but then he got loose again! But that time he ran across the street and hid behind houses and was seriously a foot away from being roadkill. I was crying by then because I couldn't find him! He is my best friend, and I couldn't even imagine what it would be like to lose him. My sister's friend realized what was going on and came out to help me. With her help, I finally caught him. Boy was I realived! From that day forward I never took him on a single walk.

Now I am pretty much the only one who takes my dog for a walk in my family, so he hasn't gotten a walk since that day. The other day, I read CONTINUED...

I dont want to walk my dog anymore... im too afraid..?
my heart goes out to u hun! I would like die inside w/ out my baby! You really need to teach him "Come" look up good ways to teach him come on google u will get tons of results. That is what will work in the long run. But for now try wat i did for my lil run way dog. get a clicker. and in ur house click it till ur dog comes and give a lil treat. Just keep doing this and soon ur dog learns that "if i come when they click he clicker I get a treat!!!" I'm serious this works, it saved my dogs life. I have a maltese and she is small if she was to get hit my a car she would instantly die *shutter* and one day she got out, she was still a pup and thought it was a game so she keept running away and wouldnt come! she got very close to a busy road!! Luckily it worked out for the best thanks to the clicker!! my mom quick grabbed it and clicked it and she came running to us. so pick up a clicker, any pet store will have one for 1 or 2 bucks. This is great for emergencies or until they have the "come" command down.

Please try this I know how important exercise is to ur dog and I appreciate u recognizing this for urself. Maybe the collar is too loose?

my next suggestion is to watch Cesar Millans "the dog wisperer" on national geographic it teaches u great ways of controlling ur dog on a walk and how to go for a proper walk. ITS AMAZING!! so watch that along with my other suggestions and i think ur dog will be safer.

BEST WISHES AND GOOD LUCK
Reply:My dog had that problem until I got a harness for him. He'll still get mad at me and try to slip out though, but it takes a bit more effort for him to slip out, and once I see the signs I pick him up (at 35 pounds, he's worse than a todler) and he gets taken back to the car or to the house, depending on whether we're walking by the lake or just up the road.
Reply:No your not ur just doint want to loose your dogy
Reply:Get a collar/leash combo for dogs that like to escape- they sell them at most pet stores. He definitely needs the exercise, so for his benefit and your family's make sure he gets it.

And here is some info for walking your dog. You'll just need to start at the beginning and retrain him. I know if you follow these tips you will be fine. And kudos for caring enough about your dog to want to get over this!

Reply:Yes, it's not good for a dog not to get out. It will most likely become understimulated and can develop serious behaviour problems.

I've walked dogs who were good at slipping out of collars and harnesses, the solution is simply to have them wear both and either get two leashes or get a leash with two snap hooks. I've never had a dog that got loose from both collar and harness simultaneously.
Reply:get him the restraint collar with the tines on it buy the rubber covers for the tines this WILL NOT HURT him it just puts general pressure that says NO It really worked with our lab.
Reply:Try taking him to puppy classes, they teach the basic commands, including how to "heel".

Also, buy him a harness type collar, it wraps around his body and in general is much harder for the dog to get loose.

Never, ever show a dog you are scared, they pick up on that an react accordingly.

And try taking some yummy, treats like Bill Jack's Liver Treats, most dogs love them and they have a strong scent to them, so IF he were to get away again, you could use those to entice him back to you.

Good Luck!
Reply:Get him a well fitting harness and he can't slip out of it.
Reply:Get one of those training leads that goes around the dog's muzzle. Or get a shorter lead. That way you'll be in more control when you're walking it.
Reply:HARNESS!!!! Then put the leash through the handle of the harness and you will have double the control. Make sure the harness is the correct fit.....not loose.....then put it on him/her correctly.
Reply:time for you and your dog to go to some classes,., and get a HARNESS one that goes over the entire head for better control of the animal or a body harness for smaller dogs..they are perfectly safe for the dog and give you better control of the animal for teaching aswell...
Reply:Don't stop walking your dog because of one incident. Start training him with treats on how to come. And definetly buy him a better harness. Instead of using a collar that can slip off w/ enough pulling, buy a harness that goes up over the the shoulder blades and under the arms
Reply:take him to puppy classes and teach him how to heel and sit and stay. that helped us and we have bulldogs!

best of luck!
Reply:This happened to me once, and I got my dog trained to walk without a leash and she would respond to my voice. I think that is the best thing in your situation. Because A dog has to walk. It is scary when this happens, but the dog has to walk. You could get a fenced in yard, I really don't recommend "chaining" a dog but in your situation its better than nothing at all, if you do that stay outside with the dog and supervise. Harness works too. Good Luck and look into getting it trained. Just if you get it trained still use a leash the training is just a backup.
Reply:First, maybe you should sign him up for some training classes so that he learns to come and obey you, then get him a well fitting collar and keep him under control when you're walking him. What happened that day probably won't happen again! Good luck!
Reply:A better collar, harness or other walking aid. Don't let this fear of one bad situation take over. Your dog is suffering and he needs his daily walks and exercise. If he is a runner, you may take this oppurtunity to work on obedience.
Reply:This is not GURANTEED to happen again and you have nothing to be afraid of. Get a new kind of collar that won't break again, a leash that's eay to grip and hold on to, and keep him close by your side when you are walking him. I am also sure that you could work something out with your parents to have them or your sister walk him too.
Reply:Sounds like you need to get a harness style leash for your dog instead of a collar. I have a basset hound that weighs over half of what I do and it's impossible to get her to obey with her keen sense of smell and stubborn personality.

Harnesses are just as comfortable for your dog and they come in all sizes, and it's nearly impossible for them to squirm out of.
Reply:Have you used a harness that way it will not come off They are a lot better then collars
Reply:I would recommend you get a better collar that he can't get out of, a harness, or a halti/gentle leader. If you're uncomfortable with walking him alone yet, ask someone to come with you until you are. Just be sure that there's no possible way he can get loose. I understand it was scary to lose your dog like that, but you can't keep him confined inside for the rest of his life. Walks will do him a lot of good. Try taking shorter walks, and teaching him how to come. Good luck!
Reply:I would suggest enrolling in an obedience class this way you and your dog can learn heel and how to properly walk on a leash. I have never had a problem with my dogs on a leash until Seamus my boxer mix oh lordy be! I feel for you because he was hell on four paws, but classes and lot of practice combines with a lot of exercise really helped. I know how scary it can be when you dog runs from you so it really is in both your best interest to learn basic obedience.

Good Luck!!1
Reply:First of all, what i would like to do is ask, how big is this dog and how big are you? That is first in determining if the dog thinks he has dominance over you. You must control your dog in the house first. My dog is a lab mix and I taught her a lot of commands in the house. She is still not under voice control yet, so that is what we are working on. It is on going though. It cannot be that you do it for a while and then you stop because you think the dog knows now. One thing about my dog is when she runs around and we call her, she won't run from us, she rolls on her back as if she is saying, "Yeah I heard you but I was doing my own thing. I'm sorry." He must be a pretty strong dog or the collar must not be strong enough for such a big guy. Sometimes we don't have money to buy the better things but a good way to go is to buy a choke chain. If used properly it should pop when the dog starts to pull. And they are one of the cheapest types of collar around. Only don't leave them on the dog after walks. I hope that I helped.
Reply:if you uy a harness instead of a collar im pretty sure the harness wont fall off because its not just around the neck.
Reply:maybe his collar was too loose that day. either way dogs NEED to be walked daily whether they r the tiniest chihuahua or the largest saint bernard. u need to walk him
Reply:Get a harness instead of a leash (less likely for the dog to slip out of and won't just pop off during a walk).
Reply:Get him a harness.

Also enroll him in obedience classes.
Reply:if he had a collar that fit, that wouldn't have happened.

that is no excuse for not walking your dog.
Reply:I walk my danes using a harness. More control. No "slipping" out of a harness. Try it, you'll like it.
Reply:i would try a harness.
